Things from the Desk of the Editor-in-Chief

  1. THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE

Yes, the Pre-Order period has come to a close, but as of today you can still order from our Heritage Pennant Collection (we have a few of each left) and make your walls happy. If you missed out you can get your hands on our newest art work WORTH A MILLION (above) the first release in our ready-to-hang GALLERY COLLECTION.

  2. A LONG TIME AGO, IN A CORPS FAR, FAR AWAY

Were you aware of this little known aspect of West Point history?

  3. ARCHIVED INTERNET HOMEPAGES FROM DAYS OF YORE

Would you like to see how West Point’s website looked in back 2013? How about in 2001? Or even all the way back in 1996? Well, we came across this incredible Internet Archive - a website that will have you going down rabbit holes all afternoon. Goodbye productivity…hello nostalgia!

  4. OUR LATEST NEWSLETTER

Did you get our latest newsletter? No. Well CHECK IT OUT HERE. Or you can SIGN-UP TO RECEIVE IT HERE.

  5. TODAY’S MOST BEAUTIFUL THING

Over on Instagram we routinely share photos of West Point things we consider beautiful. Over the last week we’ve share a UNIQUE LOOK AT THE MILLION DOLLAR VIEW, A HARD TO FIND MOSAIC ATHENA CREST, and A PHOTO OF A CERTAIN STEELY-EYED DEER HUNTER We’d love if you came and FOLLOWED US @CADETISSUE

  6. BEAT NAVY IS AN ATTITUDE

We all know the power of “Beat Navy” check out this article about the University of Virginia’s lessons learned from Army Football’s commitment to “Beat Navy”

  7. VOL III CONTRIBUTOR UPDATES

Crypto Cartel hit it big this week. USMA 2008’s Andy Mazieka struck a deal with @Tactics2Toys They will be the first retailer to carry Andy’s new tabletop strategy card game Crypto Cartel:

Citizen Skyland rounded out their creative team this week with the announcement of Alae Landry (@alea.art91) as the graphic novel’s colorist. She joins Caanan White (@Caanan02) on pencils/ink and former First Captain USMA 2017’s Simone Askew (@simoneeaskew) as writer.

  8. SMILE AT THOSE WHO LEAN AGAINST THE RAIL

In VOL IV of CADET Magazine we featured a series of poems from “To the Colors: Poems from West Point” by USMA 1967’s Mark Hamilton & Dennis Coates

One poem, POST TIME includes the line:

Only the stable air of June
    To call them to post.
    Bred for this, they know
    The odds, smile at those
    Who lean against the rail
    Walk towards shimmering dreams

This photo shared by Sons of Slum and Gravy helped us visualize this now lost tradition.

  9. THE MAGGIE DIXON IMPACT

HERE’S YOUR LONG READ for the week.

  10. EYE CANDY

I cut my teeth photographing High School Football. So, it should be no surprise that this photo essay - Rise from the Ashes by photographer Wally Skalij of the Los Angeles Times - makes me wildly happy. Enjoy.

And lastly, we need your help. Actually, VOL V of CADET needs your help. We are currently operating as close as we can to “business-as-usual” but several of our upcoming photo projects won’t be happening or were postponed until the fall. So, we have some openings for content in VOL V.

Do you want to contribute? Do you have something to say? A photo series or a single photo you think fits in line with our effort to highlight the intersection of West Point culture and art? A poem or some art? Submissions for VOL V are open now until May 15th, 2020. Drop us a note and let’s see if we can collaborate to make VOL V our best effort yet.
