CMG TRIP SECTION | WASHINGTON, D.C. PHOTO WALK

April 6, 2019

photo by: Cadet Amanda Lin USMA ‘20

On Friday, April 5, 2019 the Cadet Media Group conducted their first-ever Trip Section. It began with a trip to Fort Meade, MD to visit the Defense Media Activity HQs. After learning more about their Vision and Mission the CMG headed to the Pentagon for a tour of the DoD HQ before settling in for the evening in preparation for a full day of camera wielding in the nation’s capital.

The Cadet Media Group (CMG) is a USMA club organization under the Directorate of Cadet Activities. While the club has existed informally for a few years, the club became official in fall of 2018.

As dawn broke on Saturday, April 6th, the CMG was introduced to USMA 1990 grad Mark Kirby. Mark is a retired FBI special agent who is a dedicated and talented street photographer. He joined the CMG as they took the metro from their Alexandria hotel to the Federal Triangle metro stop in the heart of D.C.

Here they were introduced to USMA 2003 graduate, Chris Pestel. Chris is the editor-in-chief of CADET, co-founder of Homegrwn Creative and has been a professional photographer since leaving active duty in 2008. After some quick introductions the 11 members of the CMG and the Old Grads broke into groups (the CMG leadership - Bobby Norwood and Alex Gudenkauf - equally divided the groups to include beginner and intermediate skill-sets) and began hunting for photos.

The breakdown of the photo hunt included:

  1. a posed portrait

  2. a candid or street photograph

  3. a monument like you’ve never seen before

  4. cherry blossoms

  5. a coincidence

After a few miles of National Mall walking and talking and shooting, the groups met up for an informal critique/check-in/lunch break before heading out once again for a less structure adventure around Washington, D.C with visits to art galleries, museums restaurants and a healthy amount of walking. It was a successful inaugural trip-section and we look forward to facilitating in the future. There are many talented cadets within the CMG.
