Things from the Desk of the Editor-in-Chief

  1. FOR EVERY HEART IN GRAY

THE BUZZ OF NEW YORK FASHION WEEK old-grad-on-the-catwalk-alert…this is not a drill…CHECK OUT WHO WAS TURNING HEADS LAST WEEK.

ARMY FOOTBALL LORE over the last few weeks we’ve had great fun digging through the incredible wealth of Army Football knowledge and resources over on the website FORWHATTHEYGAVE.COM go there now and start digging around. You will certainly uncover something you didn’t know. Our favorite…THE CARTOONS, of course.

UNCLE JOHN Friday, September 13th was John Sedgwick’s birthday so we POSTED A PHOTO of him on Instagram with an astute observation about the the placement of his monument…BLUF/TL;DR: a punishment of mythological proportions.

OLD IRONSIDES this is just a LINK TO THE HISTORY of the 1st Armored Division - who’s insignia will be worn on the helmets of Army Football vs UTSA this week. I like the bit on the Insignia being the result of a contest. BLUF/TL;DR: PVT Linthwaite won his pass.

  2. THE DESIGN OF THINGS

WAIT A MINUTE?!!? don’t you just love waiting? “Hurry-up and wait” just might be the official unofficial motto of West Point and every 1SG in the Army. Learn a little about WHAT MAKES WAITING SUCK SO MUCH and how, if you are designing a process that involves a wait, how to make it better. The final segment on the 7-Minute Miracle in Japan gets my vote for 2nd Place feel-good moment of the week and is just simply a fine example of creative problem solving combining with leadership to produce the affect of ownership rolling down hill.

  3. THE MATRIX

LIKE FATHER LIKE SON earlier this week Brett Gerena made it official that he will be joining the ARMY FOOTBALL RECRUITING CLASS OF 2020. Brett is the son of former Army QB Joe Gerena. It’s always a special moment when the Army team gains a second generation member. This gets my 1st Place vote for feel-good moment of the week.

  4. FOR YOUR EYEBALLS

ORIGINAL HONOR CODE check out this Original 16 page 1921 copy of pocket sized TRADITIONS AND CUSTOMS of the Corps of Cadets - from the first year (then Superintendent) GEN MacArthur had it published. My favorite part is the original phrasing of the honor code: “There is no place in the Corps of Cadets or the Service for a quibbler, an evader, or a twister of the truth.”

  5. 21 WAYS TO BE A RESPONSIBLE ARMY FOOTBALL FAN

PART 1 Look, it’s going to happen. This year someone, somewhere along the way will challenge you. You may find yourself bellied-up to the bar, or at a late-summer family backyard BBQ, or a West Point Society happy hour and the question will be posed: So, what do you think about Army Football this year? How about that game this past weekend? Can you believe that Michigan game? Read More →

PART 2 You’ve watched the film. You’ve taken your reps. You’re prepared. You’re ankles are tapped. You’re feet feel quick and kick-off is here. The crowd’s collective roar fills the night air. You can feel the energy coarse through your veins as you make your way from the tunnel to take the field.

It’s the moment you’ve been visualizing all week long. It’s finally here. Read More →

PART 3 Here we’ve gathered 7 accounts to pay attention to after Game Day in order to round out your Army Football week. This list is not entirely exhaustive, so please let us know if we missed someone (journalist, photographer, podcast, etc) you feel is a can’t miss. Read More →

  6. RADIO GA GA

SPOTIFY PLAYLIST FOR 2019 my PLAYLIST IS GETTING PRETTY OUTSTANDING - this week’s highlight is the Burl Ives song “A Little Bitty Tear” I invite you to come take a listen to what catches my ear from basically three prominent sources…Austin Kleon’s weekly email NEWSLETTER, THE GAMUT and MISTER SPOILS.

  7. PENNANTS ARE SELLING OUT

AND LIMITED MEANS LIMITED we’re down to about 20ea of our newly released HERITAGE PENNANT COLLECTION. Be advised, once they are gone. They’re gone for good. Up to you…

  8. WHAT I AM READING

BUY THE TICKET, TAKE THE RIDE this past week I watched THIS VIDEO ESSAY ON HUNTER S. THOMPSON and then proceeded to pick up and start reading GONZO - The Life of Hunter S. Thompson. Wish me luck as I delve into the abyss with wretched vermin and villainous swine and blast full-throttle to the edge of human decency, yet somehow live to tell the tale. And the bats, nevermind the bats.

  9. PODCAST ROUND-UP

THE NINE OLD MEN this EPISODE OF IMAGINARY WORLDS is a great 30 minute adventure with some insight on good ole fashion animation and the old boys club of the early Disney era.

  10. CADET THE MAGAZINE

VOL IV PRODUCTION UNDERWAY and things are coming together nicely. We will have another 20+ collaborators on VOL IV. The next few weeks will find me deep in the design and edit phase.
