Things from the Desk of the Editor-in-Chief

  1. THE DESIGN OF THINGS

WEST POINT & DESIGN we're working on - a 10-part series that will look at West Point through the lens of creativity and design. We'll be exploring topics like Photography + Graphic Design + Film + Fashion + Publications + Networks + Illustration + Sound + Identity Marks + Architecture. Not quite sure what ANY of these things have to do with West Point? Perfect this is for you. HERE’S A PREVIEW OF WHAT’S TO COME

  2. OUT WITH THE OLD (GRADS)…

…IN WITH THE NEW (CADETS) This coming year be on the lookout for our poster collection. We will be designing gig posters for marquee USMA events - those timeless traditions and rites of passage - during the 47-month process. The first one is a direct homage to a recent New York Times Magazine cover by the incredible @bgrand_ that I cant stop looking at. I had to know more about what was going on with the design; what made this static design so lively, making my eyes dart and dance around its canvas. So, I started by deconstructing it and as I went along it was just screaming to be remade as an R-Day tribute. FIRST UP IS R-DAY

  3. WHAT WE’RE READING

KEEP GOING is the third major release for creative guru Austin Kleon. His first book “Steal Like an Artist” talks about where creators gets their ideas. His second book “Show Your Work” delved into sharing your process and your work to build a following and community. “Keep Going” gets into the routines of actually being a creator and how to grind it out on a daily basis. After all, creativity is a skill that you must cultivate and work hard at. I couldn’t recommend his work enough. KEEP GOING

  4. FOR EVERY HEART IN GRAY

ARMY FOOTBALL 101 so, we all know the importance of proper preparation. And, as Army Football is only about 70 days away (and is gearing up for a season where they have high expectations), you…YES YOU need to prepare yourself to be a responsible fan of the Pride & Dream. Well the boys from @AsForFootball have got you covered. ARMY FOOTBALL 101 SERIES and their most recent effort on THE DEFENSE.

  5. FOR YOUR EYEBALLS

HITCHCOCK if you like getting deep into the nitty-gritty of film making check out the story behind the story of Hitchcock’s classic North by Northwest.

THE ROLLING THUNDER REVUE if you like getting into the nitty gritty of life on the road with a band of merry mutants and aliens then look no further than this Martin Scorsese documentary on the one and only Bob Dylan: The nation was divided so they embarked on a journey through America

  6. RADIO GA GA

THANK YOU MISTER SPOILS we have been enjoying the docile tones of, I guess what one would call, surf-rock?!? The daily curated newsletter, Mister Spoils, has been dishing out some wickedly groovy tunes and our ears have been the benefactors. Notably this track by Tropics called Opioid and Half Alive’s Still Feel.

  7. LEFTOVER DAD JOKE

DAD JOKE Yes, Father’s Day has come and gone but there’s always room for one more dad joke, right?? So, without further ado…

Q: where does the President keeps his Armies? (ANSWER BELOW)

  9. West Point 100: CREATORS

JASON KOSTAL makes guitars with his bare hands. This USMA 98 Old Grad is a craftsmen in the truest sense. HERE’S A RECENT WORK OF HIS, and it is beautiful.

  10. PODCAST FROM THE WEEK

THE WALKMAN is the first episode (September 2016) from The Pessimist’s Archive - A history of why we resist new things - where you’ll travel back to the early 1980’s and explores the utter OUTRAGE over Sony’s Walkman. If you are skeptical about the devilish nature of technology, you’ll dig this. It’s fun to apply this mentality to the way Old Grad’s “hum-bug” all the live long day with “the Corps has…”
